I’m a true believer that Love begins at home. As Pierre Corneille said “Self-love is the source of all our other loves.”
It is important to Love yourself first if you want others to do the same.
If you’re on a plane and something goes wrong, they always tell you put on your own oxygen mask first before you help others, even children.
Why? Because you are no good to anyone if you don’t help yourself first – you wouldn’t be able to breathe! This is why you have to take care of yourself first.
The same is true in life.
And please don’t think that loving yourself first makes you selfish. In fact, it’s actually the opposite. The more you Love yourself, the more Love you have to give to others. Think about it – when was the last time you did something that made you so happy that you only wanted to keep it for yourself? I bet never. Because Love doesn’t work that way.
Love is like putting a drop of water into a lake – it creates a ripple effect. You are that drop and the ripples are for everybody else. The Love within you radiates out to others.
Loving yourself first is a gift to yourself and by doing so, you are then able to freely share that Love with others. This is so eloquently explained by Iyanla Vanzant in this video:
What if you devoted the next year to loving yourself more?
