5 Things I Would Tell My Teenage Self Today

Me as a teenager with my cousin

My Dearest Yaa,

You, like most teenagers, are unsure of yourself and the world around you.
You think by acting tough, you can cover up your insecurities, but this just creates lots of fear. You’re afraid because you don’t know what you are doing and think you would look stupid if anyone ever found out.

I know life can be really tough and challenging at times! You feel like you don’t fit in and aren’t good enough, and you try to hide it by being outgoing, loud and funny, but it doesn’t work, does it? Most people actually have no idea how scared you really are.

Looking back, there are so many things I want to tell you. Here are the five top lessons I want you to take through your life:

  1. Continue to be You
You have a beautiful soul – you are loving, caring and kind. You love being around people, being adventurous and can be very mischievous when you want to be. You have so many great qualities. Don’t give up on yourself just to fit in. Trust me the world needs and wants more of what you have to offer.

  2. Your Big Dreams and Goals ARE Achievable
I know you have big dreams and want to make an impact in the world. Make your dreams come true and let everyone see just how great you are.
Just don’t let fear get in your way.  Trust me, I know it’s going to be scary at times. I still get scared everyday. Yes, even now!
That’s why you need to be fearless. This doesn’t mean that the fear ever goes away, but rather you ‘fear less’ and you don’t allow fear to stop you.

  3. Be Determined
Go after your dreams no matter what. You may not know how or where to start, but if you know your ‘why’, I promise you’ll figure it out. I know this may sound cryptic now, but when you have a  compelling enough ‘why’, the ‘how’ will work itself out. Listen to that little voice that encourages you to be brave and keep going.
YOU deserve the best so go after what you want. You will only live to regret it if you don’t.

  4. Ask for Help
You don’t  have to do it all alone, ask for help when you need it. I know you think it’s weak to ask for help, but it really isn’t. I know you’re scared to ask because then people will know that you don’t know what you’re doing, but being able to ask for help is one of the most courageous and bravest things you can do.
Everything changes the moment you open yourself up and let people support you to make your dreams come true.

  5. Do Not Settle…Ever!
So many people live unfulfilled lives and let the light on their dreams diminish, but I don’t want that for you. So I need you to step up and be the person I know you are deep down inside. Stop waiting to fit in or be good enough. You may not believe it yet, but you already are.
NOW is the time to make your dreams come true. Don’t sleep on your dreams otherwise you will wake up 10, 15, 20+ years from now and wonder what happened.

All the things above require you to be courageous and determined and brave.
Once you take the first step, even though there will be some challenging moments, everything will work out for the better, I promise – just keep going!
Let your determination and passion drive you to make your dreams and goals come true.

And always always remember you have the right to be happy, but it is a choice so make sure you choose the things in life that keep you joyful.

Good luck, be brave and I’ll see you soon.
